Collaborative Management Agreement (CMA) for Provincial Parks with Treaty 8 First Nations: Summary
This is a collaborative agreement with the Treaty 8 First Nations and the Province of BC.
There is an initial opportunity for T8 FN communities to provide BC Parks and government with insight into the cultural and traditional use of the T8-BC parks and areas.
This agreement outlines and defines the roles, responsibilities and relationship between the Province of BC's Ministry of Environment (BC MoE) and the First Nations in Treaty #8 Territory of BC (T8), to guide the planning and management and creation of parks within Treaty #8 of BC together, with respect to the protection, conservation and management of natural and cultural resources while respecting Section 35(1) Rights.
T8 will be involved with developing a Parks Management Board with representatives from T8 First Nations and representatives from BC Parks.
This Board will:
- Work with BC's Minister of Environment
- Guide and review planning and management of agreement and parks
- Will work from a priority interest and involvement model
- Establish priorities for conducting inventories or scientific studies
- Make recommendations
- Identify and develop opportunities for T8 FN members
It is important that T8 members provide their leadership and land staff comments on existing parks and identify important use areas.
This BC-T8 parks board development and relationship is only between T8 and the BC Government for the park areas in Treaty 8 territory.
Please note, this agreement has not been signed.
