Elders' Words
In order to reach this vision, we had to ask, "What do the people want?" Their response was:
- Unity:We need to work together - governments need unity.
- Culture and Language:We need to keep our languages and our way of life.
- Land Use Issues:We need to examine water quality.
Our forests are in trouble - hunting, fishing, trapping and such activities are jeopardized. - Parenting and Youth:We have to teach the young our ways. Our youth want to learn. Our parents and elders are teachers. We need to listen and be good to people.
- Treaty Issues:The treaty's promise of Peace and Sharing has been broken. We must ensure that the treaty is honoured. We know that governments change their mind all of the time.
- Leadership:We all need support. We must give our leaders direction. We need to learn from the past. We must talk until issues are resolved. We must work things out.
- Elders:Our elders are our teachers. Elders' advice needs to be heeded. The Elders' Council is reestablished. They say,
"Get Over Your Differences and Work Together."
"Protect our Land, our Animals, Water and Forests...
Protect our Treaty."
