Mission Statement
The Land and Resources Department's mission is to protect Section 35(1) rights, by ensuring Treaty 8 First Nations (T8FNs) have greater participation in the territory with respect to planning and co-management of the land and resources.Goals/Objectives
- Educating Government and the public regarding Section 35(1) rights and the pertinence of these rights on land and resource planning and co-management;
- Enhanced T8FNs participation with respect to planning and co-management of the land and resources.
Department Description
Currently, the Land and Resources Department is comprised of a Land and Resources Director, a Wildlife Biologist, a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Advisor, a GIS Technician, a Cumulative Effects Coordinator and a Wind Energy Specialist. The Land and Resources Department is funded through the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs, as well as negotiation support funding provided by the Province of British Columbia.Activities
- Supporting Treaty 8 First Nation communities in the recognition, protection and implementation of their Section 35(1) rights with regards to land and resource issues;
- Supporting communication, research and negotiations with T8FNs and Governments as requested;
- Meeting with T8FNs and Governments to understand problems and issues arising with regards to land and resources which require technical and professional support;
- Communicating information on T8FNs' collective environmental initiatives to FNs, Governments and organizations;
- Briefing the Council of Treaty 8 Chiefs as requested, on meetings, workshops, and research activities with respect to land and resource initiatives;
- Coordinating special projects in the area of land and resources management;
- Directing and coordinating negotiations research, planning and other special projects in the area of land and resource management;
- Aligning with Treaty 8 Tribal Association's related departments in order to work together on promoting the protection of Section 35 (1) rights.
