A Note about Alternative Spelling
Prior to contact with Europeans, aboriginal people in Canada had an oral language. When Europeans heard aboriginal words, they wrote them the way they thought they should be. As a result many different spellings are accepted as being correct, only some of which are listed below. Throughout this website we have tried to present consistent spelling, but do not pretend that our version is the ultimately 'correct' spelling. Here are some of the ways the various Treaty 8 Tribal Association First Nations communities' names are written:
- Dane Za, Dane Zaa, Dane-zaa, Dene Za, Dene-Zaa, Dune-Za, Dunne-Za, or Dunne-Zaa (Beaver origin)
- Saulteau or Saulteaux
- Sicanni or Sikanni
